A Business Case For Courage

by Jason Greer on March 25, 2010

I’m still getting used to the idea of being vulnerable in the world of cyberspace. So much so, that I put off writing this post for several weeks, but here goes nothing.

You see, I have had some challenges as of late, some personal, some professional. As a business owner I sometimes struggle with believing that what I do matters in the big scheme of things. I know that I am skilled technician, in fact I have empirical proof that my services have brought considerable value to my clients. I have some great accomplishments under my belt and I continue to be amazed by the places and situations that I have been honored to be a part of. However, I’ve noticed that there’s something missing.

I had an epiphany two weeks ago. I came to realize that I had been playing it “safe”. As a management consultant, I knew what to do in order to ensure that the bills were paid and that our cash stayed “liquid”. No problem. What I stopped doing was dreaming. I stopped setting new goals for myself; I stopped dreaming about who I wanted to be as a professional and as a person. To put it in simple terms, I lost my courage.

Recently, I had the wonderful opportunity to spend time with a dear friend of mine, Jack Sisk, who runs the Living Insights Center in Clayton, MO. Jack has been a mentor and a friend to my wife and I for years. To know Jack is to know the peace and harmony that most strive for in life. He’s an amazing man. I shared a few of my struggles with him. Jack, in his gentle way, said to me, “Jason, courage is one of the more underrated spiritual attributes. Have courage that when you step into your gifts, and use those gifts to be of service to others, your life will blossom.”

I’ve come to realize that dreams are nothing more than cloud shaped ideas unless you have the courage to make those dreams a reality. I’m ready to step into my dreams with as much courage and power as I can muster. I’m urging you, no matter what your profession may be or where you are in life, to step into your passion. Find that thing(s) that you have always wanted and find the courage to make it your new reality. You may be concerned about the naysayers, or even your own inner voice that is constantly saying “you’ll never accomplish (fill in the blank)”. We all face demons, but living a life plagued by thoughts of “I wish I would have chased my dreams” is akin to death, at least in my book.

Let courage reign my friends.
